Sree Narayana Guru was born on August 20, 1856, in the hamlet of Chempazhanthy near Thiruvananthapuram, in the former state of Travancore, in British India, to an Ezhava family, Madan Asan and his wife Kuttiyamma. His early schooling was at Chempazhanthi Mootha Pillai’s gurukula, at which time his mother died when he was 15 years old. He moved to central Travancore at the age of 21 to study with Raman Pillai Asan, a Sanskrit scholar who taught him the Vedas, Upanishads, Sanskrit literature, and logical rhetoric.
